Dominion keen on Virginia’s wind power riches

Dominion Virginia Power, a subsidiary of Virginia's largest utility, expressed interest in the entire 113,000 acres of Virginian coast that the United States government has made available for renewable energy development.

The solicitation was issued on February 2, when the Bureau of Ocean Management issued a Call for Information and Nominations to identify industry interest in locations within Virginia for commercial wind energy leases.

The ocean management bureau also issued calls for expressions of interest for locations in Maryland (79,706 acres) and Massachusetts (826, 241 acres).

The area that Dominion Virginia Power is interested in has the potential to generate approximately 1,500-2,000 megawatts of electricity from offshore wind turbines. Detailed site investigations have yet to determine the site's exact capacity.

But if awarded a lease, the company said it will conduct detailed site assessment activities which includes building a meteorological tower for analyzing wind strength and patterns.

The company will have to get approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission for any offshore wind power generation projects.

Dominion Virginia Power is a subsidiary of Dominion, Virginia's largest electric utility. It's been involved in offshore wind studies since 2010, recently receiving a two-year $500,000 grant from the Energy Department to find ways to reduce the cost of offshore wind generation.

The company has also completed two electric transmission studies related to offshore wind studies, one of which found that Virginia has a distinct advantage over other states seeking to integrate offshore wind to their energy mix as offshore wind facilities could easily be interconnected with the existing grid at Virginia Beach. – EcoSeed Staff
