European PV industry grew in 2011, remains leader – report

Soitec’s CPV manufacturing plant to be built in San Diego this year

French semiconductor leader Soitec will open the doors to its first large-scale manufacturing facility for concentrating photovoltaic technology products by the fourth quarter of 2012. Australian electricity and gas retailer AGL Energy and American thin-film solar company First Solar will be constructing a 159-megawatt solar plant in New South Wales. The thin-film solar project, to be built across two sites in Broken Hill (106 MW) and Nyngan (53 MW), will represent a total investment of 450 million Australian dollars ($445.7 million).

The largest rooftop solar installation in the Philippines was installed by Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. on the headquarters of the Asian Development Bank in the capital Manila. Canadian solar company Siginik Energy Ltd. is building a 50-megawatt ground-mounted solar power installation in Ghana said to become the largest in West Africa and one of the largest in the continent. Siginik has signed a power purchase agreement worth over $280 million, for 25 years, with the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd., the country’s second largest utility.

German solar firm first to install 1 GW worth of PV

German firm Belectric has become the world’s first company to install more than 1 gigawatt of photovoltaic power in a span of 10 years, after commissioning a series of multimegawatt projects this month. A 70-MW array in Brandenburg, Germany is the firm’s latest project. Last year, the company installed 62 power plants worth 391 MW – 176 MW in Germany; 125 MW in France; 47 MW in Italy; 31 MW in the U.S; 8 MW in Europe, the Middle East and Africa; and 4 MW across the rest of the world, according to a report from Pv-magazine.com.
