The blend was mandated by the provincial government and is expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 56,000 tonnes a year, which is estimated to be equal to removing 11,000 cars off the road.
The mandate was lauded by the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA), a non-profit organization composed of representatives from the country’s ethanol and biodiesel industry.
"With today’s decision, Manitoba will become the first province in Canada to realize the many benefits of blending biodiesel in its fuel supply,” said CRFA President Gordon Quaiattini.
Other provinces slated to mandate biodiesel blends are British Columbia with 5% of diesel by January 1, 2010 and Alberta with 2% by July 1, 2010.
