‘Green’ jet fuel flies aviation official to Rio+20

Honeywell Green Jet Fuel, produced from inedible plant oil and used cooking oil, powered delegate flights to the Rio+20 United Nations conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

UOP L.L.C., a subsidiary of Honeywell, participated in the project led by the International Civil Aviation Organization. ICAO secretary general Raymond Benjamin flew to Brazil on two flights using a 50/50 blend of regular jet fuel and biofuel.

Mr. Benjamin flew from Mexico City to Brazil to attend Rio+20, a gathering of world leaders, governments and other stakeholders to discuss worldwide sustainable development.

The first flight, operated by Aeromexico Airlines on a Boeing 777, used Honeywell Green Jet Fuel produced from jatropha and camelina. It took place on June 18, and flew Mr. Benjamin from Mexico City to Sao Paulo.

A connecting flight on June 19 flew him from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro. This flight was operated by GOL Airlines on a Boeing 737 commercial aircraft which used fuel produced from used cooking oil and inedible corn oil.

The product is blended with petroleum-based jet fuel – usually up to a 50 percent blend – for a lower emission fuel that can be used, without modifications, with current aircraft technology. The blended fuel can offer a 65 to 85 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with pure petroleum-based jet fuel.

UOP specializes in process technology for converting petroleum feedstocks to fuels and chemicals and is developing a range of processes to produce green fuels from natural feedstock. The Renewable Jet Fuel Process for the green jet fuel was originally developed by UOP in 2007 under contract from the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
