Nordic Investment Bank to fund two new green buildings in Finland and Sweden

International financial institution the Nordic Investment Bank has signed an agreement worth 55 million euro ($68.8 million) with the Swedish construction company NCC Treasury AB to fund two new green buildings in Finland and Sweden.

The 7-year loan will pave the way for the construction of two energy-efficient buildings, one apiece at Helsinki and Stockholm.

The green buildings, when completed, are expected to generate an energy demand between 30 to 33 percent below the limits laid by the European government.

Currently, the building and housing sector in Europe consumes 40 percent of the overall energy usage of the country. Increased sustainable building could help lower the total energy consumption, said the N.I.B.

The upcoming projects will confirm to standards set by the EU Green Building program, a classification that is given to non-residential buildings that utilize at least 25 percent less energy than the average consumption. Likewise, these will have the second highest certification level under BREEAM, an environmental assessment method and rating scheme for buildings.

The N.I.B., owned by the Nordic countries Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden, focuses on financing projects that are environmentally competitive and sustainable. It has been engaged in long-term loans with clients in the private and public sectors investing in such projects. – EcoSeed Staff
