Toyota-Tesla partnership creates first all-electric RAV4

Toyota has unveiled the all-electric version of its crossover sports utility vehicle, the RAV4, at the 26th annual Electric Vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles.

The vehicle is the first product to come out of the automaker's collaborative partnership with electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, which started in May 2010. Tesla supplied the RAV4 EV's battery, which they designed and produced themselves, and its electric powertrain.

The vehicle's manufacturer suggested retail price is $49,800.

According to group vice president and Toyota division general manager Bob Carter, the vehicle is the only all-electric S.U.V. in the market.

The RAV4 EV, which Toyota claims has the driving performance, dynamics, and cargo capacity equal to or even greater than the vehicle's gas-powered sibling, has an expected driving range rating of approximately 100 miles and charging time of approximately six hours.

To differentiate itself from its gas-powered variant, the all-electric had its front bumper, upper and lower grill, side mirrors, rear spoiler and under body design restyled to maximize air flow around the vehicle. The battery pack is mounted low and to the center of the vehicle.

"We believe that the RAV4 EV will attract sophisticated early technology adopters, much like the first-generation Prius," said Mr. Carter. "It's designed for consumers who prioritize the environment and appreciate performance. We look forward to seeing how the market responds."

Other companies have released their own all-electric sports utility vehicles, including Tesla with the upcoming Model X which starts production by late 2013. But these have either yet to be released to the public for sale or have only prototypes and concept models.

The RAV4 EV will go on sale in late summer 2012 through select dealers, initially in four major California metropolitan markets including Sacramento, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County and San Diego. Sales volume is planned for approximately 2,600 units over the next three years. The battery warranty is eight years or 100,000 miles. – EcoSeed Staff
