Iran phases out CFC’s from medical inhalers

Iran has become the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to successfully phase out metered dose inhalers due to their use of chlorofluorocarbons, said the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.

Metered dose inhalers deliver medication for patients with asthma and other chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Around 300 million people with these problems are thought to need inhalers.

However many inhalers still use chlorofluorocarbons or CFC's, an ozone depleting substance which is controlled under the 1987 Montreal Protocol.

In March 2008, 21 countries from South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, together with metered dose inhaler manufacturers, agreed on the Langkawi Declaration to phase out the CFC-metered dose inhaler. Iran is the first country to meet the terms of the Langkawi Declaration. – K.R. Jalbuena
