Viridian Energy completes solar power projects in African villages

As part of their seven-year initiative "7 Continents in 7 Years," Viridian Energy completed a renewable energy project in the Atiwa district of Ghana, West Africa, in the villages of Asonafo, Abrenya and Wepeti.

Viridian energy is retail energy supplier that provides natural gas and green electricity. The company services commercial and residential electricity customers in Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

On the initiative's second year, Viridian, together with partner World Joy and Empower Playgrounds, completed the project in February, installing solar panels in schools, health posts and community libraries in the rural villages.

In schools at Abrenya and Wepeti, lantern checkout systems were implemented, giving students an opportunity to study by lamplight. Merry-go-rounds that generate electricity were installed in school playgrounds.

In Asonafo, solar panels were installed on the community library and a new health post. The installation of the panels had the additional benefit of providing a reliable source of power for a refrigeration system for pharmaceuticals, which the area did not have before.

Viridian taught the residents how to maintain the new equipment. World Joy will periodically visit the villages to help maintain the solar panels.

Viridian Energy's "7 Continents in 7 years" initiative is to undertake a major sustainability project on each of the seven continents over a period of seven years, and serves as the global component of the company's sustainability initiative. – EcoSeed Staff
