SunPower revenues up by $100 million in 2011, output at 922 MW

SunPower’s revenues went up by almost $100 million in 2011, and the company almost doubled its production from 584 megawatts to 922 MW in 2011 compared with the previous year. In the company’s fourth quarter and fiscal year 2011 report, it stated that revenues went up to $2.3 billion from $2.22 in 2010.

Primus develops own renewable drop-in gasoline

Renewable gasoline developer Primus Green Energy Ltd announced that it produced its first sample of renewable drop-in gasoline which could potentially replace gasoline produced from fossil fuels. The fuel was created through a proprietary combination of biomass conversion technologies that transforms herbaceous and woody biomass, and natural gas resulting into high octane gasoline.

Tesla Motors said advance sales of its new electric vehicle, the crossover SUV Model X, have exceeded $40 million one day after market launch. Tesla unveiled the Model X Thursday evening last week, a car that it said it will begin to deliver in early 2014, with a target of selling 10,000 to 15,000 units per year. The company will manufacture the cars at its Fremont, California factory starting by the end of 2013.

Borrego Solar Systems, Inc. closed a $47 million fund with U.S. Bank and East West Bank to back solar energy projects for corporate, educational and municipal customers in California and Massachusetts. The fund will finance 6 megawatts’ worth of solar energy systems in California, which include 10 projects for three school districts. Borrego Solar will also use the fund for two solar power installations in Massachusetts, one of which will be one of the largest in the state with a 4.7-MW

Groups against Keystone crude oil pipeline fight 24 hour deadline Groups fighting the Keystone Pipeline will march to the Senate today to deliver thousands of messages to stop it from voting for the project’s continuation, following an earlier denial from United States President Barack Obama. The Keystone project is the planned pipeline that will run through 1,700 miles of space, from Alberta, Canada to refineries in the Texas Gulf Coast. Hertz to be among the first to try EV wireless charging

Car-rental company Hertz Corporation will take part in a large-scale testing of wireless charging for electric vehicles with Virginia-based company Evatran, becoming the first car rental company to try the technology. Hertz, the world’s largest airport general-use car-rental brand, said the trial will follow the company as it uses Evatran’s Plugless Power systems on their own electric vehicles which are part of Hertz’s Global EV program.

Enerkem prepares for U.S. initial public offering

Montreal-based waste-to-biofuel company Enerkem Inc. said it is preparing for an initial public offering of its common shares on the Nasdaq Global Market and the Toronto Stock Exchange. On Friday, Enerkem filed to register as a foreign issuer with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. The company also filed a preliminary prospectus with securities regulatory authorities in each of the provinces and territories of Canada.

San Jose top ‘solar city’ in California

California’s third-largest city is still on top of the list of “solar cities” in the U.S.’s leading solar state, according to panel installer SunRun and market data provider PV Solar Report. In 2011, San Jose had 312 homeowners buying solar panels. But SunRun said there’s been a significant increase in customers choosing “solar power service,” where the latter can go solar without actually buying panels. San Jose in fact had 648 homeowners opting for this service instead, SunRun said.

Atlantic Power acquires 51% of Canadian Hills after Swepco P.P.A.

Boston-based independent power producer Atlantic Power Corporation invested $23 million in Canadian Hills Wind, L.L.C., which owns a 298.45-megawatt wind farm in Oklahoma. Atlantic Power now owns 51 percent of Canadian Hills Wind. According to Atlantic Power, the Canadian Hills Wind project is in the late stages of development under builder Apex Wind Energy Holdings, L.L.C.

Venture capital investment in “cleantech” companies in the United States reached $4.9 billion in 2011, 4.5 percent down compared with investments in 2010, according to Ernst & Young L.L.P. The category refers to activities in alternative fuels, energy generation and storage, energy efficiency, water, environment and “industry focused products and services” in agriculture, construction, and other sectors. Natural gas is included in alternative fuels.

MidAmerican completes acquisition of First Solar’s 550-MW Topaz farm

Iowa-based MidAmerican Renewables L.L.C., a subsidiary of Warren Buffett’s MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co., has completed its acquisition of First Solar, Inc.’s 550-megawatt Topaz Solar Farm which was first announced in December last year. The Topaz solar farm, amounting to more than $2 billion, is currently under construction in San Luis Obispo County, California, and is expected to generate enough energy to power approximately 160,000 California homes.

Silicon Valley-based solar company SunPower Corporation has completed its acquisition of France-based developer and panel maker Tenesol, a wholly owned subsidiary of Total S.A. In a press release, SunPower said it acquired Tenesol for $165.4 million in cash. The deal’s completion this week followed the signing of a definitive agreement between the two companies in December regarding Tenesol’s acquisition.
