Flisom to build 15 MW thin film solar production plant

Swiss thin film solar manufacturer Flisom has secured funding to further develop their modules technology.

Flisom, which focuses on copper-indium-galium-selenide or C.I.G.S. technology, will also be using this funding to build a production plant with an annual capacity of 15 megawatts.

This third funding round was completed with participation from a Swiss investor, along with existing strategic investor, India’s Tata Group.

“This new investment marks investors’ satisfaction with Flisom’s progress towards the development of industrial manufacturing technology for roll-to-roll production of flexible solar modules. The 15-MW plant will serve as a blueprint towards the establishment of larger-scale plants to manufacture flexible solar modules at low cost,” said Flisom’s interim chief executive officer Marc Kaelin.

Flisom was founded in 2005 as a spin-off of the Laboratory of Solid State Physics of the Swiss Federal institute of Technology Zurich. They have since developed proprietary tools and processes for the manufacturing of C.I.G.S. modules.

The production technology used by Flisom is basically roll-to-roll manufacturing involving the deposition of C.I.G.S. materials onto polymer foil.

Flisom has also signed an agreement with Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, to provide research and development support on high-efficiency flexible C.I.G.S. solar cell technology.

The company has been collaborating with Empa’s Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics for some time now. Empa announced in January of this year that their C.I.G.S. flexible solar cells had achieved a world record 20.4 percent conversion efficiency.

“Scale-up for large-area solar modules and adapting these complex innovative processes for industrial manufacturability is quite a challenge and requires close collaboration between research labs and industrial partner,”said Pierangelo Groening, head of the Department of Advanced Materials and Surfaces and member of the Board of Directors at Empa. – EcoSeed Staff
