Ultracell receives $ 3.8 million to improve portable fuel cells

Ultracell Corporation , a producer of fuel cells for mobile power, has announced that it has received $3.8 million in new funding.

The company will be using the new capital to scale manufacturing at the company’s facility in Dayton, Ohio. The UltraCell facility in Dayton is the first and only volume production micro fuel cell facility in North America. The funds will also be used to expand sales, marketing, and field trial testing of its flagship product, the UltraCell XX25™ portable fuel cell.

The UltraCell XX25™ Fuel Cell delivers up to 25 watts (W) of continuous maximum power. About the size of a hardbound book and weighing 1.24 kg, it is a portable power source for computing, communications, and sensing devices.

Running on a methanol and water mixture, it has fuel capacity options that range from a 250-cc cartridge that provides about nine hours of operation to an 18-liter (L) tank that can provide uninterrupted power for days or weeks.

The first commercial fuel cell system to be authorized by the US Military for portable devices, the UltraCell XX25™ can also be configured to run stationary applications such as remote video monitoring, surveillance, and communications equipment for weeks.

The round of new funding was led by existing investors BASF Venture Capital GmbH, OnPoint Technologies, Espirito Santo Ventures (ES Ventures), and Miami Valley Venture Fund. To date, UltraCell has attracted $30 million in investment since it was founded in 2002.
